You might be from New Brunswick if you can’t find a gas station

I’ve probably done the drive from Fredericton to Moncton 30 times if not more. I always fill up before I leave Fredericton. There’s a gas station just as you’re leaving civilization in Upper Gagetown. But for my New Brunswick book tour I didn’t.

There are no gas stations on the highway between Upper Gagetown and Petitcodiac, at least none that showed up on my Google map. At the mid-point I realized I might not make it. The mid-point is not where you want to be if you’re running out of gas. Or maybe it is, as I was forced to soldier on and not backtrack.

I did eventually make it after driving on empty for 30 miles. I doubt I had two miles of gas left. If it was Christmas I’d have called it a Christmas miracle.

The reason there are no gas stations must have to do with the fact that the overpasses have no exit ramps. There are a few roads that intersect but none that you can access. There seem to be a lot of overpasses in New Brunswick without basic access.

If you don’t have access to an overpass, there is no exit. And without an exit there’s no place to put a gas station. I’m sure if somebody could put a gas station halfway between Upper Gagetown and Petitcodiac it would clean up in stupid people like me who didn’t fill up in before leaving town.

[Note: This has been edited slightly. I changed Oromocto to Upper Gagetown. And apparently there is a gas station in Sussex which didn’t show up on my iPhone. Nonetheless, that’s a long stretch.]

    Mr DeAdder,

I follow you on twitter, you do great work.

I read your blog about gas stations. There are two on the Trans Canada HWY before you get to Salisbury Big STop. THere is one in Upper Gagetown, 30kms from Oromocto and one at Coles Island (McCready’s Irving)
