June 19th, 2006 The ACEC Wants You
At our convention in Halifax in 2005, we as a membership decided to be more proactive. I mentioned this at the meeting of Cartoonists Rights Network board members in Denver on June 9th.
Little did I know that we would be propelled into action so quickly.
The CRN International is limited to what it can do in certain countries around the world due in large part that so many board members are American. Countries like Iran don't respond very well to CRNI initiatives because they perceive a bias.
One way around this was to start our own network. A purely Canadian network. There are CRN affiliates all over the world. Cartoonists Rights Network South East Europe (CRNSEE) is a good example of this. CRNSEE works independently but in conjunction with CRNI.
Starting another umbrella organization called Cartoonists Rights Network Canada (CRNC) isn't easy. It would be nice to start slow and learn how the international affiliate works before jumping into something new. But the Mana Neyestani case doesn't give us this time. We are being asked by the CRNI to act on his behalf now.
The creation of CRNC has to be put on the fast track. It exists now as website, a board of three and a single press release. But we need to do more to make it a functioning network. I require a board consisting of nine members, cartoonists and non-cartoonists.
The board only meets semi-regularily through conference calls, probably once per year like the CRNI. And they discuss news items through email and make decisions that the executive board members make happen. Although there are instances when a board member may need to do work such as fundraising or public relations work, there is minimal work involved.
The Nikohang Kowsar case has shown that we can do this work, and the CRN has consistantly proven itself as a network that does important work for cartoonists, cartoonists' families and free speech.
If you wish to volunteer and know somebody who may be an asset to the CRNC, please come forward. Time is everything.
